1917: Chaim Weizmann (1874 - 1952), Israeli-British chemist and the first President of the State of Israel: first used a pure microbiological culture in an industrial process to produce acetone from corn starch which the United Kingdom desperately needed for explosives during World War I.

1928: Alexander Fleming * (1881 - 1955), Scottish biologist and pharmacologist: discovered the mold Penicillium which led to the introduction of penicillin antibiotics.

1951: Jack Williamson: (1908 - 2006), American science fiction writer: coined the term "genetic engineering" in 1951.

1952: Alfred Hershey * (1908 - 1997), American bacteriologist and geneticist & Martha Chase (1927 - 2003), American geneticist: confirmed DNA's role in heredity in 1952.

1972: Paul Berg * (1926 - ) American biochemist: created the first recombinant DNA molecules by combining DNA from the monkey virus SV40 with that of the lambda virus.

1971: Ananda Chakrabarty (1938 - ), Bengali-American microbiologist: developed a bacterium capable of breaking down crude oil which he proposed to use in treating oil spills.

1973: Herbert Boyer (1936 - ), American biologist & Stanley Cohen * (1922 - ), American biochemist: created the first transgenic organism by inserting antibiotic resistance genes into the plasmid of an E. coli bacterium.

1974: Rudolf Jaenisch (1942 - ), German biochemist: created a transgenic mouse by introducing foreign DNA into its embryo, making it the world’s first transgenic animal.
