Famous Mechanical and Civil Engineers
Imhotep (2650 BC -2600 BC), Egyptian: designed the Pyramid of Djoser under Pharaoh Djoser; use of columns in architecture.
Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BC 212 BC), Greek: is believed to setting enemy ships on fire using an array of mirrors; the Archimedes' screw, used for pumping water.
Leonardo Da Vinci (1452 1519), Italian: invented of the parachute.
Thomas Savery (1650 1715), English: invented an early steam engine.
John Smeaton (1724 1792), English: designed the third Eddystone Lighthouse (175559); pioneered the use of 'hydraulic lime' (a form of mortar which will set under water) and developed a technique involving dovetailed blocks of granite in the building of the lighthouse.
James Watt (1736 1819), Scottish: improvements to the Newcomen steam engine.
Charles Bage (17511822), English: designed the first ever iron framed building, the Ditherington Flax Mill, located in the outskirts of Shrewsbury town centre, built between 1796 and 1797.
Joseph Aspdin (1778 1855), British: patented Portland cement in 1824.
Sir George Cayley (1773 1857), English: theorized the concept of the modern aeroplane as a fixed-wing flying machine with separate systems for lift, propulsion, and control.
Joseph-Louis Lambot (1814 - 1887), French: the inventor of ferro-cement, the precursor of reinforced concrete.
Nikolaus Otto (1832 - 1891), German: inventor of the first internal-combustion engine to efficiently burn fuel directly in a piston chamber.
Rudolf Diesel (1858 1913), German: invented the diesel engine in 1893.
Gustave Eiffel (1832 1923), French: designed the Eiffel Tower, built 18871889 for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, France.
Willard Gibbs (1839 1903), American: awarded the first PhD in engineering in the United States at Yale University in 1863.
Joseph Monier (1823 - 1906), French: one of the principal inventors of reinforced concrete.
Benjamin Baker (1840 1907) English, Sir John Fowler (1817 1898) English, and William Arrol (18391913) Scottish: built the Forth Bridge, using steel, in 1889.
Francois Hennebique (1842 1921), French: pioneered reinforced-concrete construction.
Wright brothers: Orville (1871 1948) and Wilbur (1867 1912), Americans: invented the first successful airplane and performed the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903.
Henry Ford (1863 1947), American: founder of Ford Motor Company; assembly line and mass production.
Hardy Cross (18851959), American: developer of the moment distribution method for structural calculation of large buildings.
Eugene Freyssinet (1879 1962), French: pioneered prestressed concrete.
Fazlur Khan (1929 - 1982), Bangladeshi: Father of tubular design for skyscraper construction.
John Fleetwood Baker (1901 1985), British: plastic theory of structural analysis: the Morrison Shelter.
