James B. Sumner * (1887 – 1955; American chemist): first to isolate an enzyme in crystallized form and to show that an enzyme is a protein.

Carl Neuberg (1877–1956; German chemist): coined the word "biochemistry" in 1903.

Isaac Asimov (1920 – 1992; American): science fiction writer and professor of biochemistry at Boston University

Linus Pauling * (1901–1994; American biochemist): researched high-dose vitamin C, chemical bonds and the structures of molecules.

James D. Watson * (1928 - ;American molecular biologist) & Francis Crick * (1916 – 2004; English molecular biologist) & Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958; British X-ray crystallographer) & Maurice Wilkins * (1916 – 2004; New Zealand-English molecular biologist): discovery of the double helical structure of DNA.

Oswald Avery (1877 - 1955; Canadian-American physician) & Colin MacLeod (1909 -1972; Canadian-American geneticist) & Maclyn McCarty (1911 – 2005; American geneticist): discovered that DNA is the “transforming factor” and that genes are made of DNA..

Andrew Z. Fire * (1959 - ;American biologist) and Craig C. Mello * (1960 - ;American biologist): discovered the role of RNA interference (RNAi) in the silencing of gene expression.
